Creating a book starts from the original watercolors which are developed into woodblocks and printed directly on the pages for the book.
CARVING AND PRINTING THE BLOCKS
Using the watercolors as a guide, the blocks were carved and multiple color layers printed. The book has to completely planned out so the blocks on adjoining pages will correspond.
As the pages are being printed, the covers are being assembled. Boards are cut to size for the front and back cover along with the spine. These are then wrapped with a sturdy paper.
End Sheets are used to attach the pages that have been sown together to the cover. Usually, a decorative paper is used for the end sheets. Above, we are preparing a Japanese paper c1930 to be backed and mounted to the signature blocks.
Roll Over Photos
The final step is to build the slip cases which are wrapped in a heavy paper.
